Hepatitis A is an infectious disease caused by an RNA virus. Humans
are considered the main reservoir for the hepatitis A virus (HAV),2
and HAV is the predominant cause of infectious hepatitis transmitted
by the faecal-oral route. HAV is primarily transmitted from person
to person, and this type of transmission is most evident between
household contacts and within institutions. Point source outbreaks
also arise as a result of faecal contamination of water,
transmission from infected food handlers, and contamination of raw
or under-cooked foods.
